Upper School Faculty, Director of Speech & Debate
Position begins August 2024
The Pembroke Hill School, an independent school located in Kansas City, Missouri, is looking for a full-time Director of Speech and Debate. At PHS, Debate is one of our largest student programs, and has a long history of excellence both at the state and national level. The full program includes a full-time middle school coach and 3 part-time assistant coaches. We are looking for an outstanding coach and teacher with experience and skill to lead the top program in the state and one of the signature programs at Pembroke Hill School.
The candidate should have a passion for interacting with upper school students in and outside the classroom and an ability to thrive in a collaborative work environment that values innovation and creativity. A sense of humor and a positive and ambitious attitude are highly desirable. Candidates must be able to use technology to enhance the classroom experience and to use a range of resources that represent diverse experiences, viewpoints, and a passion for teaching.

Key Responsibilities:
- Teach 5 sections of upper school speech and debate from Debate I to Adv. Debate and Forensics, providing effective and professional classroom instruction, assessment, and management;
- Coach debate participants in multiple Debate events (Policy, Public Forum, Lincoln Douglas) and/or Individual Events;
- Tournament scheduling, planning, and communication for upper school competitions;
- Arrange participation, coordinate travel, and serve as the lead chaperone for debate travel to numerous in-state and some national tournaments;
- Establish a strong and positive team culture that values leadership, responsibility, mentorship, and respect;
- Establish effective communication and relationships with students, parents, and colleagues;
- Demonstrate self-motivation with high work standards and attention to detail;
- Manage the debate team budget;
- Support the well-being of all students;
- Collaborate effectively with students, parents, teachers, and administrators;
- Demonstrate strong problem-solving, decision-making, critical thinking, and teamwork skills;
- Help to maintain school policies, regulations, and expectations;
- Model professional behavior and collegiality at all times;
- Fulfill other faculty duties as assigned
- Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred
- Teaching experience in secondary school required
- The ideal candidate will have at least three years of experience and proven coaching success in high school debate or forensics with students participating at the state and national level (e.g., NSDA, NIETOC, TOC)
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills
- Reflective and collaborative teaching practice; open to feedback and improvement, modeling lifelong learning of practice including subject area
